General Directions:
Organize yourself by titling a blank pages for each of the following: Vocabulary and Metaphors/SimilesYou will respond to your reading through the mini-activities below. You should do these as we go through the book, as our classroom discussion will help you complete your work.
Self-Selected Vocabulary: After reading each chapter, choose 2 words that are new or stand out to you. Record each, along with its part of speech, synonym, antonym, and an original sentence on a piece of paper to be typed up later.
Metaphors and Similes: After reading each chapter, record at least 2 metaphors and/or similes along with the page number.
Symbolism: After the lesson in class, list at least 3 symbols from the story and explain what each may represent.
Plot: As you read, create a plot summary chart.
Personification: After the lesson in class, find four original examples. Record each quote (along with page number) and sketch a literal interpretation of each.
Irony: After the lesson in class, explain 2 ironic symbols from the story.
Conflict: After the lesson in class, sketch an image of each of the 2 different types of conflict.
Character: After reading chapter 5, compare and contrast Kino’s character.
Theme: After the lesson in class, apply the Steinbeck quote to the story.
