A Character’s Diary (AM Activity for 2012))

As you read the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, you will create a scrapbook of six diary entries.

Procedure:

  1. As you complete two chapters, choose a character to write from their perspective about the most important events, experiences, feelings or reflections.  You should choose a character that has played a major role in the current chapters, as you have recently learned more about their personality and principles, making it easier to write from their perspective.

To get started, think about: What did the character say or do in these two chapters?  What did others say about them?  How did the author demonstrate the character’s actions or feelings?  Write a diary entry where they reflect upon all this.  Have fun talking for the character; just be sure you are accurate and knowledgeable with your details.

  1. Each diary entry should be at least two paragraphs in length and in final draft form.

  1. Compile all 6 entries into some kind of creative presentation.

Historical Character Diaries (Not assigned in 2012)

As you read the novel, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, you will create a scrapbook of six diary entries.

Procedure:

  1. As you read two chapters in the novel, choose a character to write from their perspective about one of the historical events.  You should choose a character that has played a major role in the current chapters, as you have recently learned more about their personality and principles, making it easier to write from their perspective.  You’ll need to research the event, so you can explain it and your character’s feelings about the event.

Reflect on what they saw, heard, and were inspired to feel after the event.  Your diary entry should be written as if they were there and saw the event.

Have fun talking for the character; just be sure you are accurate and knowledgeable with your details.
