Investigative Report: How Sharecropping Was Used to
Keep Freed Slaves on the Farm
(DC Activity)
DUE FRIDAY, MARCH 14, 2008

With a partner, you will script an investigative TV news report documenting abuses against African Americans who worked southern farms as sharecroppers. After extensively researching the topic and exploring the role it played in our class novel, you will write a script for a mock TV news report. You and your partner must explain sharecropping and present the role it played in Roll of Thunder.

Procedures:

  1. Begin researching sharecropping in the 1930’s.  (Be sure to keep track of your sources.)
  2. As you read the novel, keep track of the role of sharecropping and its impact on the story and characters.  How does the preservation of their land ownership shape the lives of the Logan family?
  3. Use the novel and research to write a newscast script.  You’ll want to include factual information to define sharecropping and it's role in our story.  You can be creative, but be careful not just a make up story.  Be creative, have fun, use interviews or on-location reports. (Be sure your script format is clear and typed.)

  4. Complete the peer evaluation form.
