Sentence Pattern Week 17:

Week 17:  Empty and Padded Sentences

1.  Filling Empty Spaces:
Draft:  Trains are a good way to transport goods.
Revision: Freight trains carry grain, coal, and other goods.
Draft:  There is a lot to see and do on this train.
Revision:  Tail transport is efficient because freight trains don't get delayed in traffic as trucks might.

 

FIX IT!  Ask questions, eliminate repeated words, add specific details, reasons, examples, or facts.  Do more research!

 

2.  Streamlining Padded Sentences:  FIX THEM!

A.  Think about the ideas you want to express.

B.  Look for unnecessary words and phrases to take out.

C.  Look for long phrases that don't tell your reader much.  Replace each of those phrases with one or two words.

Examples:  in spite of the fact that......change to......although

                    is of the belief that...........change to.......believes or thinks

                    the reason why is because.....change to.....the reason is OR because
