Impressions

You have witnessed the hatching of our first peregrine falcon egg ... What did you think?

As soon as I walked in and saw the LCD projector set up I knew we had a baby falcon.  I rushed to my desk, dropped my backpack, and ran to tell my friends the news.  When the projector went on I thought, "We have been doing this project for over a month and the moment we've all been waiting for has come!"

I've hatched duck eggs so I sort of know how it works.  It's always fun to watch an egg hatch.  Watching an egg hatch is like playing a game blind folded ~ you never know what's going to happen.  I can't wait to see the other 3 eyases hatch!                                                                                                                      Nest Monitor-Robert

This morning our teacher checked the APK site and noticed that Buckeye and SW's baby had finally hatched.  When I came in to the classroom Mrs. Harvey was already spreading the wonderful news.  She quickly pulled up the site on the computer to show the class the baby.  We were all amazed and interested in the pictures.

All the baby falcon is right now is a little ball of fluff, but soon it will be big and strong like its mom and dad.  I can't wait until all the baby falcons are running around in the nest box.

This has been a great experience for me and I would love to do something like this again.              Nest Monitor -Sam

We are thirty-three days in to the falcon project with SW and Buckeye working to be good parents.  We had 4 eggs but now, on the 33rd day, we only have 3 left.  ONE HAS HATCHED!!  It is SO cute!  They are called eyas.  We are expecting another one today or tomorrow.  I really LOVE this project!                                           Nest Monitor -Sofia
We got to see the eyas on the Internet.  It is so cute!!  I think I want to be a falconer when I grow up.  The first egg hatched on April 25, 2003.  I was very excited when I heard that an egg had hatched.                  Nest Monitor-Brooke
An egg hatched!  Last night probably around 11:00 a peregrine falcon egg hatched.  Those falcons are still a threatened species.

In our class 8 people are going to a special site and watching two falcons, Buckeye and SW.  they have laid 4 eggs and last night one of those hatched!  It's so exciting!  The baby is so cute and we saw it being fed!  I hope that the other 3 make it.  I am having a great time watching the falcon group do this project and can't wait for more eggs to hatch.                                                                                                                                                          -Dan

A baby falcon!  I have been interested in the falcon project, and today Mrs. Harvey showed the class something that was really only the falcon group's business.  I'm glad she showed us too.  Buckeye and SW hatched one of their 4 eggs!  Buckeye didn't quite know what to do with the baby at first.                                                                  -Lillian

Today we got to watch the falcons.  It turns out that one of the eggs hatched!  Isn't that cool??  It was very exciting.  The egg hatched sometime over night.  Watching the falcons was fun.  I hope we get to see more eggs hatch.

During the period of time we spent watching the birds I learned a lot about eggs and falcons.  I learned that if you try and help an egg hatch it might die.  Later today the falcon group will dissect two eggs that died because an incubator broke.  that'll be fun!  I hope I see the eggs too.  I wish there will be more eggs in the future.                            -Tiffany

Today my teacher went on the Internet with the class and we learned about falcons.  the class got to see a newborn baby falcon that had just hatched.  I think the experience Mrs. Harvey let us have was great.  We got to see the mom feed the eyas.  We saw dad sitting on the camera mount.  It was really interesting to watch.                               -Tori
When Mrs. Harvey took us on the Internet to see the falcon site I was so excited!  One of the falcon eggs hatched!  The 8 "falconers" that are in our class were probably more excited than me.  They have been waiting to see the first baby since day one.  It was so cool seeing the little white chick.  We even got to see a falcon pellet in the nest box.  I saw information on the screen that peregrine falcons used to be called duck hawks.  We also got to "candle" two duck eggs.  It was really fun.  I wish I was a falconer!                                                                                            -Mollie
