Observation Log 16

All pictures are from the APK falconcam

6/6  Overnight temperatures in the mid 50s.  At 8:00 AM = 57.9°F; high today of 68°F; 7:00 PM = 63°F ~ perfect flying weather and Hope DID!!  According to a report on the APK falcon forum filed by Scott Wright, ODNR Nest Monitor, it was successful too.  She did have a little problem with a landing but is fine ~ a little sore, maybe.  Soon afterward Hope was seen eating ~ a good sign she is OK.  Unfortunately one of the cameras on the nest site had a larger problem so there are no close up shots from today .....

6/7  Mid to upper 60s overnight with a high of 70°F at Midnight!  9:00 AM = 64°F; 4:00 PM = 68°F.  According to 3 Cleveland Falcon Fans (Heidi, Nancy, and Jennifer) that were on site today, Kudos and Goldie are now flying ... all 3 have successfully "fledged", or flown now!  Heidi reported to me that Kudos flew, "Like he has been for years."  She also said Goldie had a little problem with a landing once and hit the building, but was able to circle around and go higher, successfully landing on a ledge next to her brother.  Hope apparently stayed on the ledge all day (on right).  the other pictures were taken by Heidi and Jennifer and used with permission.
6:48 AM  Hope deserted on the ledge

Left ~ Goldie catching the wind
Above ~ Kudos on the very top
Both of these were taken by Jennifer

Left ~ Buckeye (Dad) in a flag pole
Above ~ SW (Mom) a few blocks away on the cross
Both of these were taken by Heidi
6/8  Low to mid 60s overnight.  7:00 AM = 62°F; by 11:00 AM = 75°F and a high of 78.1°F today. There was a slight mist in the early AM hours.  Camera 1, the close up camera, is still down however it was reported on the forum that all 3 juveniles were on the 12th floor ledge today ... safe so far.
6/9  Low 60s overnight; 61°F at 6:00 AM; 6:00 PM = 66.9°F.  With one of the main cameras down and everyone on the wing now, it is hard to catch a glimpse of the family.  Occasionally one will stop by the nest box and the overhead camera will pick up their presence as pictured below.  You can see the difference in the colors ~ the first picture is an adult - we think Buckeye, and the second one is a juvenile - looking at the feet probably Goldie, maybe Kudos ... Hope's feet are lighter.

6:08 PM

7:59 PM
6/10 - 6/13  Temperatures have remained in the 60s and 70s most of the week.  6/12 & 6/13 saw light rain and mist off and on.  Our 3 "babies" are continuing to practice their flying skills off and on throughout the days around the Terminal Tower and downtown Cleveland area.  Mr. Wright has reported that they will stay in the area perfecting their skills.  Once they have flying mastered, Buckeye and SW will start dropping food in mid-air training the young falcons to dive for it ... And once that is mastered, the parents start dropping live food and hunting lessons begin.  This process will take the next month or so, then one day Hope, Goldie, and Kudos will leave for good and go off to find their own territories and make their own way.

This brings our project to a close.  Our last day of class was June 12th ... The Nest Monitor Interns have left for good, moving on to 5th grade to make their own way as well.  They are taking with them one of the more exciting learning experiences they have every had ~  thanks to APK, and all the wonderfully supportive falcon fans.  Until next season .....
