Distance Learning

We are eight students in Mrs. Harvey’s 4th grade class that are “Nest Monitor Interns” this spring.  We are observing a nesting pair of peregrine falcons on the 12th story of an office building in Cleveland, Ohio via the Internet.  This type of project is called “distance learning”.

We chose to do this project above and beyond the regular science curriculum.  We had to “apply” to be part of the team and agreed to keep up with our regular work as well as the project’s activities.  We wanted to do this because we thought it would be a challenge, fun, and Mrs. Harvey made it sound really interesting.  She was right!  We are learning a ton!

We have a schedule to check the nest three times a day.  We are keeping an observation log, researching, collecting facts, saving pictures, reading, and writing about falcons.  We have a web site that our work can be seen on … http://powayusd.sdcoe.k12.ca.us/teachers/lharvey/OnLineProjects/peregrinefalcons/intro.htm  (Sorry about the long address.)

The eggs are due to hatch the end of this week!  You can go to the live cam and watch them too http://falconcam.apk.net  (There is even a link from this page to our page in the upper left hand corner.)

The Cleveland Connection

As mentioned a few weeks ago, eight students in Mrs. Harvey’s 4th grade class have been observing a nesting pair of peregrine falcons on the 12th story of an office building in Cleveland, Ohio via the Internet.  The eggs hatched the weekend of April 25th and the “eyases” are now 3 weeks old.

Falcon fans in Cleveland have been keeping an eye on our project and web site, and the law firm of Walter and Haverfield, on whose window ledge the nest is located, made the decision to allow US to name the babies this year!  The Ohio Department of Natural Resources and APK, the company that provides all the cameras, supported our efforts further by setting up a live webcast so we could participate in the banding and naming of the babies ~ virtually.

On May 15th the falcon team and interested students and parents in Room 22 got to school at 6:45 AM to witness something few people get to see.  We were very proud and honored to hear OUR falcons named ~ Hope (for the First Lady of Ohio and hope for the peregrine’s future recovery), Goldie (for the golden state of CA), and Kudos (to represent the K in APK).  We sent in 18 possible names.  The final decision was up to ODNR’s head biologist, Dave Scott.

You can see the banding pictures and read more about it in the observation log on our web site: http://powayusd.sdcoe.k12.ca.us/teachers/lharvey/OnLineProjects/peregrinefalcons/intro.htm  (Sorry about the long address.)
