Our Thoughts on "Banding"

Today was Banding Day ... What are your thoughts about our experience?

My best part of the day was the morning.  We got to see the baby falcons at the nest site get banded.  We also got to meet a lot of people.  The babies were loud at first but after awhile they got quiet.  The biologist named the babies Hope, Goldie, and Kudos ~ OUR names!  I really appreciate the people who let me watch this exciting event!                                                         -Kyle

Today we had a breathtaking experience!  We got to see baby peregrine falcons get banded ~ live!!  We got to talk to the experts like Mr. Scott, Mr. Wright, and Mr. Beagle from ODNR.  They answered all our questions we asked them.  We also got to name the babies - Hope, Goldie, and Kudos.  I hope I get to do another project with this much excitement.                                            -Will
Today I experienced something wonderful ~ the banding of baby falcons.  I thought it was great!  The purpose of banding the babies is to help keep track of them.  The bands are made out of metal and it clips to the leg of the falcon.  Dave Scott picked our names ~ Hope Goldie, and Kudos.  I think I want to be a falconer after being in this project.  I hope you little falcons enjoy your life.                                                                                                                                                    -Marina
Today was the banding day.  It was SO exciting!  I even got interviewed.  When they announced the names I was shocked they named one after California - Goldie, for the golden state.  It was a great experience and I had a lot of fun.  I felt very honored to be able to see the banding.       -Sofia
Today was a fun day because we got to watch the falcon babies get banded.  I had a fun time.  I LOVE peregrine falcons.  They are so neat and interesting.  I was excited when Mr. Scott announced the 3 names and Mr. Beagle told us over the phone.  The names were picked by us!!  Hope's band says 14/E - as in Edward, Goldie's band says 15/E, and Kudos' band says 06/P - as in Paul. We wrote down all the answers to all our questions.  They answered all our questions too.  Mrs. Harvey, Ms. Marshack, and Mrs. Foote were so excited they almost cried!                  -Brooke
This morning was banding day ~ how cool!  A couple of days ago Mr. Beagle emailed us and said we would be naming the babies.  I was amazed ~ then today it happened!  It was cool to hear them say our names for the eyases.  Mr. Dave Scott picked the perfect names and I felt great when he picked all our names ~ Hope, Goldie, and Kudos.  Today was a great learning experience for me.  I have a new appreciation for wildlife ~ especially birds.  This will follow me through the rest of my life.                                                                                                              -Robert

Today a miraculous thing happened ... the people on the falcon team experienced a live webcast from Cleveland, Ohio's Terminal Tower of the baby peregrine falcons being banded by the ODNR.  It was just amazing that we got to see the banding live from San Diego.  We got to ask the experts questions and they answered them all.  I made sure I wrote down every piece of information that was given to me.  The most exciting thing was when they picked the final names for the babies.  Now we have 3 wonderful birds by the names of Hope, Goldie, and last but certainly not least little Kudos, the only boy.  This project has been a terrific learning experience and I hope I can do something like this again.                                                                                -Sam

Today was one of the most exciting days of my life!  From the second the projector came on to the second it went off I was spellbound.  I could hardly even blink.  When one of our questions were answered I wrote it down like it was an instinct ~ I wanted to get all the information I could about what was happening.  With the camera and the speaker phone I almost tricked myself into thinking I was right there.

First one of the men extracted the 3 eyases from the nest box.  (Very brave of him considering SW was dive-bombing him.)  Next came the banding and the blood sample (I hate having blood taken) for tracking and testing.  There are 2 girls and 1 boy.  Our names, that Dave Scott the biologist, selected are; Hope (for the First Lady of Ohio and their bicentennial year), Goldie (for the golden state of CA, where we live), and Kudos (for the K in APK, the company that operates the falconcam we have been watching).  Personally I think these names are 3 of the best names a falcon could have.  I hope that Hope, Goldie, and Kudos live a full, meaningful, long life.       -Jessie
