The Rules - Zoom and Rulers

Using the Zoom Tool, Rulers, Setting Margins and Grids

In order to view various parts of your publication close up and as a whole document you need to learn the zoom tool.

Zoom Tool

View the bottom of the screen and program for the zoom tool, as shown below:

Next to the zoom tool there are two buttons - and +.  Click on the button to view your publication getting smaller.  This allows you to view the entire document at once.

Click on the button and view your document getting bigger. This button allows you to view specific areas of the document close up. F9 on the keyboard allows you to move back and forth or zooming in and out.

 

 
Rulers

1.

Move your pointer over the perpendicular symbol on the ruler (this is where the two rulers meet).  Notice that a Diagonal Resize tool appears.  By holding down the left mouse button drag the rulers into the working area for better measurement as shown below.  When you are at the desired location unclick the left mouse button.

You can also move in the vertical or horizontal ruler in the same manor as moving the pointer over the horizontal and vertical ruler.  A vertical or horizontal resize tool will appear like the diagonal resize tool.

 

Margins and Grid

To set the margins, click on Arrange/Layout Guides...

Set all the margins to 0 inches, grid columns to 4 and rows to 1 if they are not as shown below:

Notice that as you change the grid and margin setting the preview changes to give you an example of your proposed settings.  To turn off the Boundary and Grid Guide Lines, click on View/Show Boundaries and Guides.
