The Idea

Creating the Idea

Creating an idea for a board game might seem hard at first, but actually (for this assignment) there is an easier way by using an existing board game as your foundation.  Below is a way to approach creating a board game from an existing board game.

Remember that to create a board game idea, you can:

  • Use and existing board game as a foundation changed at least 33% from the original game

  • Start from scratch with a brand new original idea (the hardest way)

  • Work in groups to come up with a good idea or direction (remember that each student must do their very own work and the game must be visually different)

  • Create an idea based upon something you know or can relate to in your life

  • Use an existing group, political group, friends, or organization as a start

Instructions

1.

On your own time, select a board game that your are very familiar with or like to play.  Take the game and become familiar with the existing rules if you are not.  For example Monopoly.

2.

Now, think about how you would like to modify the board game.  For example, you can create a Poway High School version of Monopoly or even one around the football team.  What about "Powayopoly" for a name?

3.

Now lets consider the rules of the game.  We will need to modify them based upon our needs or interests of Poway High School.  So instead of collecting real estate, we are collecting courses, and instead of earning money we are earning grades or points.  Jail could be "In School Suspension" or ISS and other fines could be such as detention or referrals.  We can now create a set of rules on MS Publisher.

4.

Lets take our idea and then create a few sketches for how we can modify the game board.  Remember to keep it simple.  You only have one week to complete the game.  So utilize your time efficiently and wisely.  For example, the board has been modified simplistically as shown below.

5.

Now you can create the board on MS Publisher by following the new rules and sketches of our modified game board.

6.

We now have an idea for the board game and just need to open up MS Publisher to create the game.  Remember that you do not have a lot of time, only one week.  So, do not take to much time on deciding what game you are going to make.

In this lesson you learned to create an idea for a board game.
