Overview:

This unit is designed to help students get involved in the political process. They  will be guided through a survey of how the national government works. They  will be asked to investigate some current, controversial issues. They will develop an opinion regarding these issues and create a persuasive argument which they  will send to political representative (s).

 

California State Standards:

8.2 Students analyze the political principles underlying the U.S. Constitution and compare the enumerated and implied powers of the federal government

8.3 Students understand the foundation of the American political system and the ways in which citizens participate in it.

11.11 Students analyze the major social problems and domestic policy issues in contemporary American society.

12.4 Students analyze the unique roles and responsibilities of the three branches of government established by the U.S. Constitution.

12.6 Students evaluate issues regarding campaigns for national, state, and local elective offices.

 

Grade Level Appropriateness:

This project will work with eighth grade students or higher. Some of the questions are complex and many of the issues are sensitive.

 

Timeline:

This project will need several hours  to complete. Students will need to do an internet treasure hunt, investigate current issues and voting procedures. They will need to formulate a letter and send it to a representative.

 

Additional Resources:

There are many other issues that may intrigue students. They may find these issues using newspapers, magazines, television, etc. Students may also wish to handwrite the letter and send it using traditional mailing services.
